Description
Internal Family Systems (IFS), pioneered by Dr. Dick Schwartz, is a transformative, research-backed approach to addressing internal constrictions, conflicting reactivity, and overwhelm with courageous compassion. Drawing from 40 years of clinical practice, IFS integrates the principles of family-system-theory into the internal world of the individual—who, as Walt Whitman beautifully expressed, “contains multitudes.” This trauma-informed approach enables the practitioner to be liberated from the overwhelm of parts of ourselves (often flee-fight-freeze reactions), and to hold space for the inner liberation of others.
This 6-week, in-person course offers a deep dive into the practical application of IFS, extending beyond traditional therapy into coaching, spiritual direction, and group facilitation. Through a combination of small group practices and contemplative personal exercises, participants will learn to cultivate compassion, curiosity, and courage toward the parts of themselves that need to be loved the most.
Rather than simply learning “about” IFS, this course is designed for participants to engage “with” IFS tools in real-time:
Practice unblending from activating parts and the emotions and stories that often replay in our bodies
Deepen Self Leadership through grounding and embracing inner authority.
Hold brave space for others, allowing them to unblend and deepen their leadership, without becoming reactive or emotionally hooked.
Who is this For:
Team leaders who encounter reactive individuals
Parents and friends who recognize their own overwhelm when it gets hooked by the reactivity of loved ones
Spiritual seekers looking to develop the inner capacity to hold space for collective change
Chaplains, clergy, therapists, and facilitators seeking to build personal resilience to hold healing space for others
Expectations for Participants:
Familiarity with Healing and Transformation: This is not an introductory Hive class. It is recommended that participants already be familiar with Hive classes or have experience in inner work, coaching, or spiritual direction.
Not a Substitute for Therapy: It is strongly suggested that those actively experiencing PTSD or diagnosed with acute trauma be engaged with a mental health professional and check with a professional before joining this group.
Weekly Reading or Listening: We will use articles and podcasts to learn more about IFS outside of the class.
Daily Practices: IFS is mindfulness-based, so consistent practice of guided meditation outside of class can deepen the experience (and also pay off in the long-run as a sustainable habit).
Intention of the Hive
When you join a Hive experience, you're invited into our intention to create a group experience that's inclusive, rooted in mindfulness, and dynamically relational. We aspire for each Hive experience to model these intentions, and even to refine them as we continue to learn how to gather in a way that's transformative! The embodiment of these intentions by Hive facilitators, Members, and class participants is what makes the Hive the unique and healing social container that many experience it to be.
