Description
Meister Eckhart’s Christmas sermon in the 13th century challenges us with the question: ‘What good is it that Christ was born 2,000 years ago if He is not born now in your heart?’ This reflection will be our guiding question as we delve into Eckhart’s teachings on the eternal birth of God in the soul, and how this inner transformation is the true meaning of Advent.
This workshop invites participants to journey deeply into the heart of Advent through the lens of Meister Eckhart’s mystical teachings. Advent, traditionally seen as a time of preparation for Christmas in the Christian liturgical lineage, holds a much richer and broader spiritual significance than merely looking back at the birth of the historical Jesus, a little over 2,000 years ago. Drawing on the profound insights of Meister Eckhart, we will explore the threefold coming of Christ: His historical birth, continuous birth in our hearts, and final coming at the end of time. The workshop will focus on the second aspect of Jesus’ coming.
Through contemplative reflection and discussion, we will uncover the mystical dimensions of Advent, focusing on themes such as:
The eternal birth: Exploring Eckhart’s concept of the ongoing, eternal birth of God within us, a call to spiritual rebirth and regeneration.
The mysticism of the Ground: Understanding God’s Ground as our ground, and living from this profound unity.
Living without a why: Embracing a life of detachment as freedom, following Eckhart’s invitation to disengage from worldly desires and cleave to the infinite.
This workshop offers a space to move beyond the traditional preparations for Christmas, inviting participants to experience the continuous and transformative coming of Christ in their lives, leading to a deeper and more meaningful celebration of the Advent season.
This conversation will be drawn from teachers in the Christian wisdom tradition, while benefiting from experiences of those in the group from other backgrounds.
