Description
What is the relationship between personal healing and collective justice? Prentis Hemphill's recent book “What it Takes to Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change the World”, beautifully demonstrates that these two goals are not separate, but rather interdependent and equally indispensable. In the wake of the 2024 election season, the necessity of healing our individual and collective traumas and accepting the inter-connectivity of all humanity may be more apparent than ever.
Many are wondering what is being called of them in the wake of the election results. Instead of succumbing to despair or prematurely springing into action from an untethered place, now is the time for us to ground, link arms with our communities, co-regulate our nervous systems, and develop practices of solidarity with one another. This class is for anyone interested in this important work, from disillusioned movement organizers who seeking to turn inward for healing, to those who have long lingered "in the realm of healing," as Hemphill writes, and are ready to "face the terrifying and massive questions of how we live more justly in this world together." In short, it is for anyone looking to be in community as they seek to bring into balance and alignment their orientation toward personal healing on the one hand and collective justice on the other.
The class will use Hemphill's book, chock-full of personal stories and ideas relevant to this theme, as a centerpiece to the class. The week off between each session will give participants time to read, process, and soak in the content. The class sessions themselves will incorporate somatic practices, small groups, dyads, and lectio divina, all of which seek to encourage participants to engage in discussions from a centered and whole place that incorporates body, heart, and mind.
What to Expect:
Readings & Discussions: Engage in thoughtful conversations that delve into the book’s key concepts and how they resonate with our lives and communities.
Somatic Practices: Participate in guided embodiment exercises inspired by somatic principles to deepen your understanding and integration of the material.
Co-Facilitated Learning: This class will be held in a co-facilitated format, fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment that honors diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
Who This Is For: Anyone interested in exploring themes of healing, somatic practices, and social justice in a community-oriented setting.
Let’s discover together what it takes to heal.
Note: Participants are responsible for acquiring a copy of Prentis Hemphill’s book, What It Takes to Heal. You can purchase the book here, or consider renting it from a local library.
Intention of the Hive
When you join a Hive experience, you're invited into our intention to create a group experience that's inclusive, rooted in mindfulness, and dynamically relational. We aspire for each Hive experience to model these intentions, and even to refine them as we continue to learn how to gather in a way that's transformative! The embodiment of these intentions by Hive facilitators, Members, and class participants is what makes the Hive the unique and healing social container that many experience it to be.
